World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

Did you know that May 21st is designated as "World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development" by the United Nations?

Below Rick Graves, Vice President, Global Services, shares his thoughts on the importance of supplier diversity.

Diversity/inclusion has broad meanings across our industries. It is much more than just welcoming and embracing the opinions and ideas of people of diverse ethnicity, culture, gender, religion, age, personal style, physical ability, and appearance. To me, “inclusion” encompasses helping diverse suppliers establish relationships with a worldwide company like ours as well as our clients.

Many small and new businesses are uncertain about how to meet the challenges presented by the ever-increasing diversity of today's workforce and suppliers. Fluor is a company based on relationships, and building outstanding relationships with our clients and in the communities we serve is paramount to our success. Supplier diversity is just one more area that affords us the opportunity to enhance those relationships. In the O&M group, we have experienced personally the benefits that come from working with women- and minority-owned businesses in the communities in which we operate.

As a primary focus, we try to help improve the economic opportunities for women and minority-owned businesses in our communities. Fluor has helped these companies develop invoicing processes, marketing and other back-office processes, so they can comply with our major clients. In the Operations & Maintenance group, we have employees who serve on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Business Council of the Southwest as well as other committees and councils to help these small businesses build their capabilities. In addition, we support and participate in trade fairs to help promote supplier diversity with our clients in the communities we work.
